both watches we brought are Casio G-Shocks. one is a Ref. 6900 and the other a Ref. 5600. both are limited edition collaborations. the Ref. 6900 with the watch magazine Hodinkee and the musician John Mayer and the Ref. 5600 with the beach utility brand Western Hydrodynamic Research. i’ve said it before and i’ll likely say it again: i am not a watch journalist and i don’t want to write a traditional review of these G-Shocks. this story is just to make you think what watch you would pack for your next out-of-office adventure and why you might consider bringing a G-Shock as well.
what makes these watches so brilliant is that they are serious without being serious. sounds confusing but the thought behind it is simple. you never need to think about a G-Shock when it’s on your wrist. they have all the ruggedness you might need for any kind of outdoor activity and, even without being careful with them, they will continue to look good for a long time. they are a serious piece of kit but they are not to be taken serious. a lot of people (us included) have had G-Shocks growing up and the watches do carry that child-like element of fun that is so refreshing. from unusual shapes to bold colors or a print on the strap, you can just get away with that little bit more on these watches. this element of child-like fun is what vacation feels like and something we should keep in our minds beyond a holiday. all that makes these watches the perfect companion for your next vacation, for exploring near or on the ocean and every other day.
that last part is important to mention. these watches do of course not only make for great vacation watches. they can be worn for pretty much any occasion. i’ve taken the 6900 on a trip to new york, worn it at the office and to various restaurants or parties. it never felt out of place. if anything a colorful G-Shock is a welcome change from the norm of watches and makes for a great conversation starter. something we always have a soft spot for.
