side note | the story behind our brand — dlbrt dltnts.

from how nothing good was ever made without enthusiasm, to all the things we love and reframing our interpretation of the term ‘dilettante’.

this story marks our 10th piece of published content. to celebrate this milestone we want to do something a little different: instead of looking outwards for cool things to highlight, we look inwards and take a closer look at something that is present since day one of this website. the brand behind it — dlbrt dltnts — and how we came up with this name.

to put our main idea as short as possible: we want to do things we love in a way that brings us joy.

we started this website to engage with and do things we love and explore where these efforts lead to in the process. this also means that we do a lot of things for the first time and learn about something as we go. we love the idea that to be great at something, you first have to be willing to be bad at it. to chase opportunities to go from not knowing to knowing and to be open and honest about saying “we don’t know”. to embrace being a dilettante because that’s how you improve. we want to learn, and to be fascinated and surprised on a continual basis. this requires intention. we have to be deliberate about it. deliberate dilettantes.

for the final touch to our brand, we looked towards the little prince. not the story, but the author. Antoine de Saint-Exupery was not only a writer but also an engineer and a pilot. he gave a definition of what makes a design that has stuck with us: „perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away“. we took this advice to heart and shortened our brand name as much as possible without losing the sound of the original idea.

deliberate dilettantes turned into dlbrt dltnts.
