55.555 kilometers. not exactly a significant milestone in the life of a car. still, when the odometer of our porsche 944 turned over to show five consecutive fives back in april, we couldn't resist taking a few pictures.
there is something strangely satisfying about numbers lining up like that. 55.555 is no different from 55.554 or 55.556 in any meaningful way. the car drives exactly the same, and nothing particularly interesting happens when that last digit changes. yet somehow, we had been looking forward to it.
when we bought the 944, it had just under 50.000 kilometers on the clock. we crossed that mark on the drive home from the dealer. an actual milestone, in some sense. five matching digits, on the other hand? completely arbitrary. and still worth getting the camera out for.
what makes this particular number interesting to us, though, is also what happened between those two milestones. more than 5,000 kilometers of road trips, spontaneous drives and plenty of ordinary journeys in between. nothing particularly extraordinary when taken individually, but together they have become our own little history with the car.
i think that is part of what makes being interested in cars, watches, or pretty much anything else so enjoyable. you start paying attention to details that might seem completely irrelevant to someone else. things that have very little practical significance but still manage to put a smile on your face.
we have written quite a bit about our 944 already. the drives we've taken, the places we've been, and what makes this particular car so enjoyable to own and use. this time, the occasion itself was hardly extraordinary. just five matching digits, a few photographs, and another small reason to appreciate the car.
on to 66.666.
